Horticulture also serves as a high contributing industry to the state’s economy. Out of the total area of horticulture in the state, 90 percent is concentrated in the valley due to its suitable climate. With annual turnover of 75 million USD, this sector is the biggest source of income in the state’s economy next to agriculture. Additionally, horticulture is gaining momemtum in the state as revealed by its 7-8% contribution to the state’s GDP.

Almost 45% of economic returns in the agricultural sector is accounted for by horticulture.4 The agro-climatic conditions prove highly suitable for growth and development fruits and various wild herbs. Local soil is deep and rich in organic matter and access to human resources for farm labour is amply abundant.

The horticulture industry also serves as a great advantage to the state due to its monopoly on walnuts, black walnutsalmondspearscherriesappleshazelnutspecan-nutsstrawberriesgoji berriespersimmon, and kiwi fruits. However, according to the J&K Planning CommissionKashmiri horticulturalists have limited their industry to merely supplying primary products rather than diversifying their market through value addition. Juice concentrate and jams, processing units for saffron, herbs and dry fruits like almonds and walnuts also offer abundant opportunities for entrepreneurship. Export potential for processed fruits, walnut products, honey, and etc., will increase through consciencious use of fertilizers for quality production and disease protection. By utilizing modern technology for packaging and cold storage, youth entrepreneurs can transform the Kashmirhorticulture industry.

Cultivation of medicinal plants costs less while income is higher

Psoralea corylifolia
Agricultural experts say that farmers can significantly increase their income by cultivating medicinal plants because the cost of cultivating medicinal plants is low while the income is high. Psoralea corylifolia has a special significance in medicinal plants. ۔ The powder of its seeds is very useful for leprosy. Its seeds are often used in snake bites, scorpion bites and skin diseases. Useful in cleansing the blood and kills stomach worms. Use 3 to 4 kg of seed per acre for Babchi cultivation. Fertile land where there is plenty of water for irrigation is suitable for cultivation. When preparing the land, scatter eight or ten tons of manure per acre in the same amount throughout the field.

Then plow and mix well in the soil. Add one sack of triple phosphate at the time of sowing. Apply urea fertilizer at the rate of one and half sack per acre within the first 60 days after completion of sowing. There are two ways to do this. Make games at a distance of one and a half feet and place seed squares at a distance of 9 inches above them. This can be done with the help of a drill instead in rows on a level surface in the ground. In this case, the soil should have enough moisture. Apply seed squares at a distance of 9 inches on both sides of the tracks at a distance of 2 feet. This method is more suitable. In case of sowing on sports, water immediately after sowing. Give enough water so that its moisture reaches the seeds. If sowing is done on a flat surface, do not water for fifteen to twenty days so that the roots of the plant can be strengthened in soft soil. Give the first watering after 15-20 days, then continue watering at intervals of two weeks, then the growth of the crop will continue satisfactorily.
