Synonyms: Physalis edulis
Family: Solanaceae (Nightshade Family, Potato Family)

In folk medicine it has been used for cancer, malaria, asthma, hepatitis, dermatitis and rheumatism. Today it is used within European herbal medicine to treat kidney and bladder stones, fluid retention, gout and urinary tract disorders.

The physalis has a unique sweet and tart tropical flavor, combining hints of cherry tomato, pineapple, fig, and strawberry. The skin is similar to a tomatoes and is perfectly edible. After biting through the firm exterior, the juicy flesh inside is soft with many small, edible seeds.

Malaysia, and the Philippines, Pakistan, Iran,United states, Kashmir,

Other uses: Cape gooseberry is made into 
fruit-based sauces, pies, puddings
chutneys, jams, and ice cream, or eaten 
fresh in salads and fruit salads

In Latin America, it is often 
consumed as a batido or smoothie, 
and because of its showy husk, 
it is popular in restaurants as a 
decorative garnish for desserts.

To enhance its food uses, 
hot air drying improved qualities 
of dietary fiber  ontent, texture, and 
appearance.

In basic research  on fruit maturation, the 
content of polyphenols and vitamin C 
varied by cultivar, harvest time, 
and ripening stage.

However, traditional medicine seems to be providing new hope.
Artemisia  annua kashmir

The plant Artemisia annua (wormwood) is the oldest known anti-malarial treatment, having been used in China for over 2,000 years. It contains the drug artemisinin. “The artemisinin level in the blood is too low. To treat malaria properly, patients would have to drink 20 litres of tea every day”. The University of Tübingen (6) has shown that after drinking 1 litre of artemisia tea each day for 7 days, the level of artemisinin in the blood was high enough to treat malaria effectively.
