Startup Uttarakhand

The Himalayas have a great wealth of medicinal plants and traditional medicinal knowledge. The Central Himalayan Region covers the new state of India, provides excellent opportunities for studying the Traditional Knowledge Systems. The Indian Himalayan region alone supports about 18,440 species of plants (Angiosperms: 8000 spp., Gymnosperm: 44 spp., Pteridophytes: 600 spp., Bryophytes: 1736 spp., Lichens: 1159 spp. and Fungi: 6900 spp.) of which about 45% are having medicinal properties. According to Samant et al., out of the total species of vascular plants, 1748 spp. species are medicinal. Uttarakhand is a storehouse of a rich variety herbs and medicinal and aromatic plant species. The Government intends to exploit this advantage. Uttarakhand has observed an increase in the area under cultivation of aromatic and medicinal plants

The number of farmers engaged in cultivation of aromatic plants in Uttarakhand has dramatically increased from 301 in 2003-04 to 2714 in 2006-2007 and the area under aromatic plants has increased ten fold.           
Jam, Jelly, Juice & squash are made from fruits and these are food items. This foodprocessing industry has thus far developed as a demand – based industry and hence only about 1.5 percent of fruits of the country is processed so far. If promoted as a local resource based industry its growth may be much larger especially because of fast increase in export. 

India is second to only Brazil in fruit production. In fruit and vegetable production India can boast of not only the quantity but also variety. Besides, the country is get to exploit large part of horticultural land in the form of hill slopes. Transport, storage and processing are the needs for fruit and vegetable, production in the country. At present about 40 percent of Indian horticultural produces go waste due to lack of these facilities. Fruits can be processed to produce juice squash Jam, Jelly and Marmalades. Jam jelly making is simply a profitable business. 

In addition, you can initiate the business as a small scale with low capital investment. Food processing industry has started receiving a great deal of attention from the policy makers. The current industrial policy in food processing is also favourable for food processing industry. India is the 2nd largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world, and the food processing sector in the country is expected to double in the next decade. 

The ever-growing consumer demands have opened up huge investment opportunities for foreign and private entities in the food processing industry currently. Generally, jam and jelly from almost every type of fruit and some vegetables. 

Fruit jam contains rich fruit pulp and available in quince, apple, blackberry, blueberry, kiwi, apricot, sea buckthorn, gojiberry, mulberry, elderberry, cherry, mixed fruit, pineapple and orange flavors. Jelly is a clear, bright mixture made from fruit juice, sugar and sometimes pectin. Generally, people use jelly and jam as the bread spread and as a filling for some cakes and cookies. 

The  Jammu and Kashmir Medicinal Plants Introduction Centre-JKMPIC, is a pioneer institution in pvt. sector to start cultivation of important indigenous medicinal plants and introduce many from other parts of the world. A preliminary study on cultivation of medicinal plants in Jammu and Kashmir was from this institution. The medicinal plant garden created, grown and nurtured by JKMPIC around its unit complex contains Kashmir’s largest privately owned collection of medicinal plants, spanning over 200 varieties, including rare and endemic medicinal plants suitable for Himachal, Kashmir, Utrakhand and cool areas of India.

The garden is a treasure of herbal remedies that have been used for thousands of years by our ancestors for healing, health and beauty.

All plants in the garden are carefully conserved for future generations further, a tissue culture lab. Established within the medicinal plant garden propagates and distributes rare medicinal plants as a further conservation effort. The plant introduction centre also nestled within the garden carries out advanced plant study  into the medicinal plants in the garden, researching and validating their traditional uses.
